Fact Sheet for Pet Reservoir

Introduction:

The Pet Reservoir is a domestic water supply impoundment situated in the township of Ridgley on the North West Coast and is open to the public for fishing. It is a very popular fishing destination for anglers living in the local municipalities. Camping, boating and the lighting of fires are not allowed. Access to some of the shoreline is restricted due to public safety issues and these areas are clearly defined. The Guide is surrounded by gently sloping grassland allowing easy walking access. It is a very popular family orientated fishery and is open to all legal freshwater fishing methods.

Fishing Information:

The Pet Reservoir contains both rainbow and brown trout. There has been some stocking of Atlantic salmon and Tiger trout in previous years but has been discontinued. A small resident and self-sustaining population of brown trout is regularly supplemented by the stocking of rainbow trout. The fish normally average from 200 to 1.5 kilograms. The Pet Reservoir is most productive during the early part of the season from August through to December.

Fisheries Management Information:

This fisheries' catch rates, harvest and angler effort are monitored using the IFS Angler Postal Survey. The Inland Fisheries Service manages the Pet Reservoir as a multi species fishery with a self-sustaining population of brown trout and a population of rainbow trout supplemented by annual stocking.

Other Fish:

Galaxias species. The giant freshwater lobster Astacopsis gouldi is present in this catchment and sometimes found in the dam. Anglers are reminded this is a threatened species and completely protected under State and Federal Law.

Fishing Tips:

Wattle grubs or worms are used when bait fishing. During the warmer months the use of mud eyes under a float is very productive. Spinning and wet fly fishing is popular during the early season. Evening fly fishing using dry mud eye or cadis patterns accounts for most fish during the late summer months.

How To Get There:

Travel west from Burnie on the B18 to Ridgley. The Pet Reservoir is situated within the township and can be easily seen east from the main road.
